Stories by Day, Stories by Night
A chalk dragon and an insecure young artist. A confident girl seeking the Old Man in the Moon with (believe it or not) another dragon. A homeless and fatherless family living under a bridge in Paris with a grumpy old tramp. A middle school girl wrestling through inadequacy and bullying. Suzy and Sammy Littletail.
We spend so much of our day reading, reading, reading. It’s the joy of our hearts. Brian is flying through “Henry and the Chalk Dragon” by Jennifer Trafton as their bedtime story. Willa’s face says it’s scarier than it actually is, but it certainly has them anxious to hear more!!
The challenges of 2020, the isolation away from our family, the heartaches right outside our door… it all flows away when the book falls open or the Kindle blinks on. The stories draw all of us into adventures, joys, sorrows, and triumphs as one, gifting us a very special shared experience.

Imagination. Time. Dragons. Lions. Clouds. Open spaces. Closed doors.. mysterious guests, heroes, villains… Colorful pages, sketches, hard pack, paperback, or audible……development of their ability to create their own pictures be they real or in a story, is a lifetime skill…I obviously applaud this closure to a world broken, into a world of family, intimacy, and safety…..

I just love this post!!
You guys are in my thoughts and prayers often. We still have your postcard hanging on our refrigerator.
Your family is truly an inspiration to the rest of us.
Our family reads together constantly. It has been some of the most important bonding time we’ve ever had. Now that the kids are older (Silas started 9th grade this year, and Savannah 6th) it has been cool when they read books on their own and recommend them to us. Right now Lindsey and I are both reading the Eragon series on Silas’ recommendation. Haha.
Some of our favorites as a family have been Andrew Peterson‘s Wing Feather series. You must check this out! If you have not already read them. It is a very CS Lewis, George McDonald level story.
And the green ember series. Epic. Thrilling. Excellent.

Did Silas really start 9th grade this year?!? Too fast!!
Okay, so Wingfeather. We LOVE, but we haven’t read them with the kids yet and Brian hasn’t read the last one. He’s waiting to finish them with the girls. Ray and I love Green Ember, but Willa was dragging her feet to those read-alouds. She was finally able to articulate that they’re just too scary right now. Looking forward to the day we can do them and it not be too scary.
Please, please!! If you guys remember or hit on a book that you love, send us an email!!! Your comment is so kind and encouraging, but know that it flips right back your way. Your family is a light in how you love each other and shepherd your kids. We strive to emulate that. Love you guys!!
